MYTH: Everything I use has to be oil-free because oil clogs my pores.
FACT: OIL IS A NATURAL PART OF OUR SKIN’S STRUCTURE AND CAN HELP NOURISH THE SKIN.Yep. You read that right. Haven’t you ever heard the word SEBUM? In case you haven’t, sebum is the natural oil produced by your sebaceous glands. These glands can be found all over your body, except at the palms of your hands and soles of your feet. Where these glands are most abundant are on your face as well as your scalp. Now sebum, or your natural oil, has two very important roles.
1. You see, sebum basically forms kind of like an oily surface that then coats and covers your skin. Obviously, this keeps your skin from becoming dry at the same time reduces natural water loss. Since you all know by now, one of our stay young mantras, DRY SKIN IS A SIN AND THE ROOT OF ALL WRINKLES. So sebum is very important for keeping your skin soft, smooth, and wrinkle free. 2. Understand that through the pore of your hair follicle, sebum will then reach your skin, right? Once there, it will create something called an acid mantle, which is basically your sebum mixed with sweat as well as other lipids and such. Now, this acid mantle protects your skin from bacteria. So it actually helps keep it healthy.[caption id="attachment_3019" align="alignright" width="300"] Thanks to Wiki for the pic![/caption]
But what about people who have oily skin or are acne prone? The first thing that you have to realize is that no matter what you do, you cannot stop the production of your body’s natural oil, which is a good thing. In fact, it’s a GREAT thing. It will slow down the older you get, but surely, sebum will always be secreted. The problem with people who have oily or acne prone skin is not that sebum is produced, OR THE USAGE OF PRODUCTS WITH OIL, but that your body’s sebum production might be a little bit out of control. Again, this has nothing to do with using products that contain oil or any other outside oil sources you may have. The culprit? More often than not, IMBALANCED HORMONES. So, like practically everything in nature, in life, the key is balance.
BALANCED HORMONES = BALANCED OIL PRODUCTION
